Asiamoney [AM]: Please describe your background in Asia, and the reach of Credit Suisse in 1989.

Kai Nargolwala (pictured right), Asia-Pacific CEO, Credit Suisse [KN]: I came here on January 1, 1990, with Bank of America (BoA), and was with them until 1995, after which I moved to Standard Chartered. Overall I was with BoA for 19 years and then I spent 10 years with Standard Chartered.

Back in 1989, BoA had been the pioneering US bank in the region but it had just come out of a deep crisis when it almost went bankrupt. In the process of righting itself BoA had had to sell assets, give back licences, reduce staff etcetera.

It needed to rebuild and it did so by building some retail presence in Asia. Essentially I started this off after the Security Pacific purchase because I believed very strongly that the strength of Asia would be...
